My friend Susie listened to my music therapy speech this afternoon and shared her interest in horticulture therapy. Is there a future for us to work together at some point?

I dropped by the lovely Waterford today and spoke with CarolAnn and Caitlin. We had a great conversation about music therapy and how it might be applied at their facility. I also talked with Jason, a chaplain working in hospice and shared with him current research about MT and the wonderful work that can be done for patients and their families. Yesterday, Pat got to hear about music therapy over lunch at Olive Garden.

Today I spoke with the wonderful educators at a beautiful Montessori school about music and early childhood. Thanks to Julie, Ryan and Michelle for your participation and feedback. We talked about Anne Green Gilbert's Brain Dance and worked our way through the 8 fundamental movement patterns to recorded and live music. We also played tone chimes, Reverie harp and egg shakers. My next project for the school is to write them a special song about their school.

New business news• UpBeat Music Therapy Services has opened in Vancouver. It is the only music therapy service in Clark County. The company was established by longtime resident Anne Vitort, a former Kindermusik educator. Vitort says music therapists design musical experiences to help clients achieve non-musical goals, such as physical, emotional, cognitive, communication or social goals. No musical experience is necessary for a client to benefit from music’s power to heal. http://www.upbeat musictherapist.com, 360-607-8187 or http://www.music therapy.org.

Talked to Sharon and Karen yesterday about music therapy. We attended the ribbon cutting for a wonderful adult day center in Vancouver. I also talked to Gloria, who owns Rainy Creek Boutique in the Vancouver Market Place downtown Vancouver, WA. The shop is adorable and I couldn't help myself when I saw two framed floral pictures for my kitchen. Check out her shop!

Every day I am thinking of how I can spread the word about music therapy and the power of music to heal -- so I am adding Paula my chiropractor, April at my naturopath's office, Carrie at my credit union, Linnea my lovely photographer, Cathy - a personal trainer working with seniors, Corie at the beauty salon.
I have been blessed with so many great supporters who have not only listened to my music therapy "elevator speech" but have passed my name onto others! Thanks to Grethe, Mona, Kathy, Pete, Bev, Georgeen from Good Shepherd Church.

So I was at Whole Foods today and told a man who was sampling his flavored olive oils about music therapy -- his name is Tom with Extravagonzo Gourmet Foods. I also talked to my decorator, Kim, as she was redecorating my family room.
I went to a party last night to celebrate a friend's birthday and to welcome home his daughter from her travels. I spoke with 5 people about music therapy and handed out all my business cards -- Judy, Sharon, Kathy, Pete, and Saran all heard my brief spiel about music therapy and the populations that can be served with music!

I talked to 9 wonderful women at the Third Thursday Book Club tonight about music therapy -- Patti, Laurie, Lorraine, Barb, Martha, Kathy, Mary, Pat and Sue. Thanks, ladies, for listening to my music therapy stories and sharing with me your experiences with music! Mary shared that a nurse friend knows firsthand about the use of music in hospice, and Pat mentioned that she read an article recently about the same topic. In January, I chose Daniel Levitin's This is Your Brain on Music for the book group to read and we had a lively discussion about music's effects on the brain. While I worked on my Music Therapy degree at Marylhurst, these amazing, smart and talented women supported and encouraged me all along the way. Thanks, Third Thursday Book Club!

I am so excited to bring music therapy services to Clark County Washington! But I am finding that not many people in our area know what music therapy is or what it can do to promote wellness. So, I have decided it is my mission in 2011 to talk to whomever I can about it! I have set a goal for myself of talking to 1,000 people this year about music therapy.
